Equinox – David Towsey

Everyone is not as they seem in this fantasy novel, replete with war, witchcraft and secrets.

Christophor Morden lives in a world where everybody changes with the rising and setting of the sun. For every person contains two distinct identities – a day brother and a night brother. One never sees the light, the other nothing of night.

One evening Christophor, one of the king’s special unit of witch hunters, is woken early by a call to the city prison. A young woman has torn her own eyes out, and the police suspect supernatural causes. The investigation takes Christophor far from home, to a village on the edge of the kingdom.

There he will find his witch – and his night brother will find himself desperate to save her. And as this battle of the self rages, the witch’s ancient and apocalyptic ritual comes ever closer to completion…

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Equinox holds an interesting storyline. Two beings inhabit the same body, a day and night brother/sister. Both living completely different lives and can even have different partners. The idea of it was intriguing and I was looking forward to getting stuck in. Our main characters are Special Inspector Christophor Morden who is the night brother and his day brother is Alexander who is a musician by trade. Unfortunately, Alexander draws the short straw when Christophor gets called out on a witch hunt.

The writing was well done but I couldn’t get engaged with the storyline fast enough and was a bit bored until about halfway through. The world building was the same, it was there but I might have liked more depth. It is a dark and dangerous fantasy with a magic system that is new to me, the two sides of the same coin personality, so that kept me interested but there were points were I got a bit confused as to who’s thoughts were who’s, which might have been the goal to be fair.

This is not a fast paced novel, the story unfolds slowly as an investigation might, it could also be confusing at parts but I think this might be done purposefully to create this type of atmosphere of a paranormal mystery. If that’s your thing then you will definitely enjoy this one.
